Unraid
Install Norri from Community Apps on Unraid. The Docker image includes the server, web app, database, and transcoder.
Join the Norri Discord for setup help, announcements, and discussion.
Install
- Open Apps, search for Norri, and click Install to open its configuration. If the Apps tab is missing, install the Community Applications plugin first.
- Select your existing Unraid folders for Movies, TV shows, and Music as needed. Leave unused Host Paths blank. Keep the default appdata paths unless using a direct pool path, and leave the port at its default. See Appdata and Media folders below.
- For hardware transcoding, follow GPU access for your hardware before clicking Apply. Skip GPU configuration if you do not want hardware acceleration. Then continue to Open setup to start Norri and set up your server.
Appdata
For faster browsing and scanning, keep both Norri appdata folders on an SSD/NVMe pool. They store settings, artwork, cache, and the database; your media can stay on the array. The default Host Paths are /mnt/user/appdata/norri/data and /mnt/user/appdata/norri/database. These follow the appdata share’s storage settings, so /mnt/user does not necessarily mean array storage.
Exclusive share
On Unraid 6.12 or later, an exclusive share lets you keep the default Host Paths while accessing the pool directly, avoiding the extra user-share filesystem layer. This is the recommended option when your appdata share qualifies:
- Open Shares → appdata. Set Primary storage to your SSD/NVMe pool and Secondary storage to None.
- Open Settings → Global Share Settings and set Permit exclusive shares to Yes.
- Return to the appdata share and confirm Exclusive access: Yes. Its files must all reside on that one pool, with none on the array or other pools.
Changing the share settings does not move existing files. See Unraid’s exclusive-share explanation for the requirements.
Direct pool paths
If exclusive access is unavailable or disabled, set both Host Paths directly to your SSD/NVMe pool. For a pool named fast, use:
| Mapping | Host Path | Container Path — leave unchanged |
|---|---|---|
| Norri appdata | /mnt/fast/appdata/norri/data | /var/lib/norri |
| Norri database | /mnt/fast/appdata/norri/database | /var/lib/postgresql/data |
Replace fast with your actual pool name from Unraid’s Main page. Use /mnt/cache/… only if your pool is named cache. This also bypasses the extra user-share filesystem layer, but ties the paths to that pool’s name. Keep both folders separate from each other and from your media.
Already running Norri? Stop Norri and back up both complete folders before changing storage. Move and verify the existing data first; changing a Host Path to an empty folder makes Norri start with new data. Follow Unraid’s storage migration guide, including disabling Docker and VM services when using Mover.
Leave room for artwork, cache, and database growth, and keep backups of both folders. A single-drive pool is not protected by the array’s parity.
Media folders
Each Path mapping connects a local Unraid media folder to a named folder beneath /media in Norri. Your media stays where it is; nothing needs moving or copying. Norri’s library folder picker uses /media as its root, so keep media Container Paths beneath it. The Container Paths are already filled in, so you only need to choose your Host Paths.
Movies, TV shows, and Music mappings are already provided. Set each Host Path to the local Unraid folder you want to use:
| Mapping name | Host Path example | Container Path |
|---|---|---|
| Movies | /mnt/user/movies | /media/movies |
| TV shows | /mnt/user/tv shows | /media/tv-shows |
| Music | /mnt/user/music | /media/music |
Select your actual local folders; the Host Paths above are examples. Leave unused Host Paths blank. Unraid skips blank mappings, so they do not need deleting. You can remove an unused entry if you prefer.
You can add as many mappings as you need. For another media folder, click Add another Path, Port, Variable, Label or Device, choose Path, and fill in Name, Host Path (your local Unraid folder), and a unique Container Path beneath /media. Choose Read Only access.
In Norri, select /media/movies for your movie library, /media/tv-shows for your TV library, and /media/music for your music library. Only mappings with a Host Path selected appear in the folder picker.
GPU access
Choose the instructions for the GPU you want Norri to use. The GPU must be available to Unraid’s host driver, rather than reserved for a virtual machine. Hardware support depends on the GPU model and driver.
Intel integrated graphics, Intel Arc, or AMD
Current Unraid versions include Intel and AMD graphics drivers and normally load them automatically. No additional Intel/AMD driver plugin is normally needed. Intel integrated graphics uses Quick Sync on supported hardware; it still needs the Device mapping below to be available inside Docker.
- Open Unraid’s Terminal and run
ls -l /dev/dri. Confirm it contains arenderD…device. If it is missing, check that integrated graphics is enabled in your BIOS and that the GPU is available to Unraid rather than assigned to a virtual machine. Your Unraid version must support the GPU model. - In the Norri container editor, click Add another Path, Port, Variable, Label or Device. Choose Device, set Name to
GPU, and set Value to/dev/dri. Click Add.
Name is just a label in Unraid. Device with Value /dev/dri exposes the host’s graphics devices to Norri; Norri handles their access permissions. No GPU UUID or NVIDIA environment variables are needed for this route.
NVIDIA
- In Unraid Apps, install Nvidia Driver if it is not already installed. Complete the plugin’s first-install instructions, including its Docker restart or reboot step. Open the installed plugin’s settings and confirm your GPU appears under Installed GPU(s).
- Edit the Norri container and switch to Advanced View. Append
--runtime=nvidiato Extra Parameters, with a space before it. Keep the existing parameters. - Click Add another Path, Port, Variable, Label or Device, choose Variable, and add each row below. Name is the label displayed in Unraid; Key must match exactly.
| Name | Key | Value |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GPU | NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES | all, or the UUID of the GPU you want to use |
| NVIDIA driver capabilities | NVIDIA_DRIVER_CAPABILITIES | all |
Use all for NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES to make all NVIDIA GPUs available; no ID lookup is needed. To select one GPU, copy its UUID from Installed GPU(s) in the Nvidia Driver plugin settings. Include the GPU- prefix and paste it without spaces. Alternatively, open Unraid’s Terminal and run:
nvidia-smi --query-gpu=name,uuid --format=csv,noheader
Copy the UUID next to the GPU you want. Do not copy another user’s GPU ID or an example ID. Setting both variables to all is valid; the runtime setting is still required for this setup.
The plugin’s setup guide covers driver installation and supported cards. NVIDIA’s container reference explains device selection and driver capabilities.
Open setup
- Click Apply to install and start the container. Once it is running, open Unraid’s Docker page, click the Norri icon, and choose WebUI. Enable Autostart here if Norri should start with Unraid.
- From your home network, follow Claim This Server, create your administrator account, and choose your collection defaults. No Norri cloud account or email address is needed.
- Add your libraries using the folders beneath
/media, then select Start Norri. Norri scans your media in the background.
Setting up your server walks through the complete setup. Afterward, you can use the web app or connect a client app.
Check GPU use
After completing setup, open Norri’s Settings → Transcoding as the administrator. Under Hardware Acceleration, keep Auto-detect, or choose a detected GPU. Save your settings; if you changed the GPU selection, restart the container for it to take effect.
Play a video that needs conversion and check Settings → Active Sessions for its video encoder. Direct playback does not need video encoding, so it will not demonstrate GPU transcoding.
See Hardware Transcoding for Norri’s settings and playback checks. If you do not want GPU acceleration, omit the optional Device mapping, NVIDIA variables, and --runtime=nvidia setting.
Updates
The repository is registry.norri.tv/norri/norri:latest. Unraid checks its registry digest and offers an update when a newer image is published. Check for Updates detects it; Update pulls the new image and recreates the container with your existing settings and appdata. A container restart alone does not download a newer image.
Updates are applied when you choose them, unless you separately configure automatic updates. Keep both appdata folders. To back them up, stop Norri, copy both folders together, then start Norri again.
