NFO Metadata Files
An NFO file stores details about a movie, TV show, episode, artist, or album alongside your media. Norri reads supported Kodi-format NFO files without changing them.
Turn NFO Reading On or Off
When adding or editing a library, open Advanced Options → NFO Metadata Files. Movie, TV, and music libraries have Use NFO metadata files enabled by default.
- On: Norri reads supported NFO files and local artwork, using the mode below to choose which source takes priority.
- Off: Norri ignores NFO metadata and uses online sources. Supported file tags and your manual edits can still supply details.
Changing this setting does not delete your NFO files or media.
Choose a Mode
| Mode | How details are chosen |
|---|---|
| Prefer online (recommended) | Online details take priority; NFO values fill gaps. This is the default. |
| Prefer NFO | NFO details take priority; online sources fill gaps. |
| NFO only (offline) | No online metadata or artwork lookups for this library. Norri uses supported local metadata and artwork. |
Your manual metadata edits take priority in every mode. Music file tags can also provide details when higher-priority sources leave gaps.
Prefer Online
Use this for automatic online metadata while retaining useful local details. Norri identifies movies and TV through TMDB and music through MusicBrainz. A valid provider ID in an NFO can help identify the correct title, but conflicting or incorrect IDs can still need review.
Prefer NFO
Use this when you have curated your own metadata. For example, an NFO description takes priority over the online description, while online sources can supply details the NFO does not contain. Online identification still takes place.
NFO Only
Use this to prevent online metadata and artwork requests for the library. Norri can read local NFO files, supported media tags, and local artwork. It cannot obtain missing details from an online provider, so some information may remain empty.
This controls library metadata lookups. Opening an external website link or playing an online trailer is a separate action. See Privacy for external connections.
File Locations and Supported Details
Movies
Place the NFO beside the movie, using the video’s base name, such as The Matrix (1999).nfo, or movie.nfo in a folder containing one movie.
Norri can use provider IDs, title, year, description, genres, and other supported movie details. Local artwork includes common names such as poster.jpg, folder.jpg, and fanart.jpg.
TV Shows and Episodes
- Put show details in
tvshow.nfoin the show folder. This can include IDs, title, description, dates, ratings, networks, genres, cast, and crew. - Season names and descriptions can come from season entries in
tvshow.nfo; a separateseason.nfois not required. - Put episode details in an NFO with the video’s base name, such as
Show Name - S01E01.nfo. - Local artwork can sit in the show and season folders or beside an episode.
Music
- Put
artist.nfoin the artist folder for artist details and the MusicBrainz artist ID. - Put
album.nfoin the album folder for album details and MusicBrainz release or release-group IDs. - Local artwork includes common names such as
folder.jpg,cover.jpg, andfanart.jpg.
For folder examples, see Media Organization.
Matching and Updates
NFO modes choose where descriptive details come from. Online matching, when enabled, also checks which title an item represents. Prefer NFO does not mean blindly accepting any provider ID stored in the file. See Media Matching.
Save library settings after changing the mode. A later scan reads changed local files; Update Metadata refreshes metadata according to the library’s current settings. Your manual edits remain protected.
