Metadata Sources
Norri uses several third-party metadata providers to enrich your media library with artwork, descriptions, cast information, and more. We use these services in line with their terms.

No setup required
Metadata enrichment is built in. You do not need to sign up for anything, create accounts, or enter any API keys. Norri ships with everything it needs to fetch metadata and artwork out of the box.
Movies & TV Shows
The Movie Database (TMDB)
TMDB is our primary source for movie and TV show metadata.
Data provided:
- Titles and descriptions
- Poster and backdrop artwork
- Cast and crew information
- Release dates and ratings
- Genre classifications

Music
MusicBrainz
MusicBrainz is an open music encyclopedia that provides comprehensive music metadata.

Music metadata is provided by MusicBrainz, an open music encyclopedia. MusicBrainz is operated by the MetaBrainz Foundation, a California-based non-profit.
Cover Art Archive
Album artwork is sourced from the Cover Art Archive, a joint project between the Internet Archive and MusicBrainz.
TheAudioDB and ListenBrainz
TheAudioDB supplies artist biographies, images, and additional music details. ListenBrainz supplies popularity and similar-artist information when available.
How Metadata Matching Works
For movies and TV shows, Norri reads identifying information from file names and supported local metadata, then looks for a match through TMDB when online metadata is enabled. TV episode details are fetched by season. Cast and crew biographies and photos can continue in the background after import.
For each music album, Norri reads file tags and supported local metadata, matches the album through MusicBrainz, and fetches online details and artwork when enabled. The library’s metadata preferences determine which source supplies each detail. Imported albums become available as the scan progresses.
Norri stores the resulting metadata and artwork on your server. With NFO only (offline) selected, it uses supported local information without requesting online metadata or artwork.
Updating Metadata
You can run Update Metadata at any time:
- Go to Settings → Libraries
- Select the library
- Run Update Metadata
Metadata Settings
Open the library’s edit page to set metadata language, rating country, and NFO preferences. Available choices depend on the library type. Configure scheduled metadata updates separately in Settings → Scheduled Tasks.

For music, lookups that could not finish are remembered across server restarts and retried automatically when online metadata is enabled and the provider is ready. These retries wait while a library scan or playback takes priority. Imported tracks remain playable while a lookup is pending. Check Music Metadata and Artwork under Settings → Scheduled Tasks → Background Tasks for its status.
