Initial Setup
This guide covers everything from powering on your Norri endpoint for the first time to having it accessible on your home network.
What’s in the box
- Norri audio endpoint device (Raspberry Pi with audio HAT pre-assembled)
- Pre-flashed micro SD card (already inserted)
- Power supply (5V USB)
- Quick start card
If you purchased a Norri Endpoint Kit, it also includes a case and speakers are sold separately.
Powering on
- Connect your speakers to the audio outputs on the device
- Plug in the power supply
The device takes approximately 15–20 seconds to boot. There are no buttons, displays, or LEDs to indicate status. The device is ready when it appears on your network.
Connecting to your network
You have two options: ethernet (simplest) or WiFi.
Option 1: Ethernet
Plug an ethernet cable into the device. It will automatically obtain an IP address via DHCP and be available on your network immediately.
No further network configuration is needed. You can skip ahead to Finding your device on the network.
Tip
If you have ethernet available, use it. It’s more reliable than WiFi for audio streaming and requires no setup.
Option 2: WiFi setup
When no ethernet cable is connected and no WiFi credentials have been saved, the device automatically creates a temporary WiFi access point for setup.
-
Connect to the setup network. On your phone or laptop, look for a WiFi network called Norri-Setup. It’s an open network with no password.
-
Captive portal opens automatically. Your phone should automatically open the Norri configuration page. If it doesn’t, open a browser and go to any website. You’ll be redirected to the setup page.
-
Select your WiFi network. The page shows a list of nearby WiFi networks detected by the device. Select yours, or type the network name manually if it’s hidden.
-
Enter your WiFi password. Type your WiFi password and press Connect. For open networks, leave the password field empty.
-
Device connects to your network. The device will shut down the setup access point and connect to your home WiFi. This takes a few seconds. Your phone will automatically disconnect from Norri-Setup and return to your normal WiFi.
Once connected, the device remembers your WiFi credentials and will reconnect automatically on future boots.
Note
While the device is in setup mode, audio protocols are not yet running. They start once the device has a network connection.
What if WiFi connection fails?
If the device can’t connect to your WiFi (wrong password, network out of range, etc.), it will automatically return to the Norri-Setup access point so you can try again.
Changing or forgetting WiFi
You can change your WiFi network or clear saved credentials at any time from the web configuration interface. If you clear your WiFi credentials and no ethernet is connected, the device will return to setup mode on next boot.
Finding your device on the network
Once connected (via ethernet or WiFi), you can access the device’s web configuration from any browser on the same network.
Using the hostname
By default, the device is accessible at:
http://norri-amp.local
The hostname is derived from the device name. If you change the device name to “Kitchen Speaker”, the address becomes:
http://kitchen-speaker.local
The .local address uses mDNS (multicast DNS), which works on:
- macOS and iOS: built in, works immediately
- Windows 10+: works with most modern browsers
- Linux: requires Avahi/mDNS (common on desktop distributions)
- Android: support varies by device. If
.localdoesn’t work, use the IP address
Using the IP address
If .local addresses don’t work on your network, you can find the device’s IP address from your router’s DHCP client list. Look for a device with hostname matching your device name (default: norri-amp).
The IP address is also shown on the web configuration page once you can access it.
Next steps
Your device is now on the network and ready to use. Audio services start automatically. You should already see the device in AirPlay, DLNA, and Bluetooth on other devices.
To customize the device name, toggle protocols, or manage WiFi settings, see the Configuration guide.
