Watch Status

Watch status tells you whether you’ve watched a movie or TV episode. Norri tracks this automatically based on playback progress, but you can also set it manually. Watch status is per-user, so every member of your household has independent tracking.

How Playback Tracking Works

Norri tracks your playback position as you watch. There are specific thresholds that control when tracking starts and when an item is automatically marked as watched.

When progress starts tracking

Your playback position is saved once you have watched for at least 1 minute. Before that point, no progress is recorded. This prevents accidental clicks or brief previews from cluttering your library with progress bars.

When an item is automatically marked as watched

An item is automatically marked as watched when both of these conditions are met:

  • You have watched past 90% of the total runtime
  • You are within 10 minutes of the end

Both conditions must be met. This dual threshold works well across different content lengths:

Content90% point10 min remainingMarked watched at
22-min TV episode19:4812:0019:48 (90% is later)
90-min film81:0080:0081:00 (90% is later)
3-hour film162:00170:00170:00 (10 min remaining is later)

For shorter content, the 90% threshold is the deciding factor. For longer films, the 10-minute remaining threshold ensures you aren’t marked as “done” when there’s still a significant chunk of film left (e.g., 18 minutes remaining on a 3-hour film at 90%).

When an item is marked as watched, the progress bar is cleared and replaced with a checkmark badge.

Manual Override

You can manually mark items as watched or unwatched:

  1. Open the movie or TV show detail page
  2. Click the checkmark button in the action buttons row
  3. The button toggles between watched and unwatched states

On movie detail pages, the checkmark button appears after the Play button. On TV show detail pages, it appears as the first action button and marks all episodes as watched.

When you manually mark an item as watched, any in-progress playback position is cleared. The progress bar disappears and the checkmark badge appears.

When you mark an item as unwatched, the checkmark badge and any progress are both cleared, returning the poster to a clean state.

Rewatching Content

When you, or a different household member, start watching something that has already been marked as watched:

  • Once past the 1-minute tracking threshold, a progress bar appears alongside the checkmark badge
  • The checkmark badge stays, meaning “has been watched at least once”
  • The item appears in your Continue Watching row on the home screen
  • If you watch past the completion threshold again, the progress resets and the item returns to the watched-with-no-progress state

Watch history is never lost by rewatching. The checkmark badge records that you’ve seen it, and the progress bar shows your current position in a rewatch.

TV Show Progress

For TV shows, watch status works at multiple levels:

Episode level:

  • Each episode tracks its own watched status
  • Progress bar shows how far you are in the current episode

Season level:

  • Shows an unwatched count badge (e.g., “3” means 3 unwatched episodes)
  • “Mark Season Watched” marks all episodes in that season

Show level:

  • Aggregates status from all episodes
  • A show is “watched” when all available episodes are complete
  • A show is “in progress” when some episodes are watched

Continue Watching

The Continue Watching row on the home screen automatically shows:

  • Movies or episodes you started but didn’t finish, sorted by most recently watched
  • The next unwatched episode in any show where you’ve watched at least one (Next Up)

Items disappear from Continue Watching when you finish watching them or manually mark them as watched. See Home Screen for more about customizing your home screen layout.
